Engineering Manager

Primary Job Function

Manages development activities for APT’s fall-in-progress detection and protection technology with external partners, utilizing both engineering and project management skills.  Ensures a high-quality product is delivered to the customer on time.  Also manages junior product development engineers.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Project Management

  • Leads the overall development, technical oversight, and management of projects co-developed with external development partners
  • Develops and executes project plans with the goal of on-time, high-quality product releases
  • Primary liaison between external development partner(s) and other project team members, including in-house shared services, end users, buyers, in-house manufacturing, and external vendors

Product Development

  • Manages and develops junior/new PD engineers in accordance with project and company goals
  • Develops new products, including line extensions/modifications to existing products, from concept through commercialization according to the APT product development process
  • Conceptualizes new product designs based upon current industry trends and needs
  • Applies Design Control from concept through launch, producing high-quality products that meet their functional and design requirements through proper risk management
  • Conducts initial prior art searches for new design concepts and works with patent council to patent products in development and on APT’s product roadmap
  • Coordinates Design V&V activities and certifications to assure products meet functional and design requirements and comply with applicable standards in accordance with regulatory strategy
  • Works with manufacturing personnel during the design development to optimize design-for-manufacturability and design-for-assembly in product designs


  • Identifies and investigates new technologies to help develop our product roadmap
  • Stays on top of industry trends through professional organizations, networking and/or conferences
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with experts in the field, within both academia and industry
  • Knows and follows all laws and policies that apply to the job, and maintains highest levels of professionalism, ethics and compliance at all times
  • Roles and responsibilities may be shifted to maximize customer and Company success


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Biomedical Engineering required (Master’s preferred)
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in the design and development of software-driven electromechanical products in medical devices, wearables, and/or consumer electronics
  • Demonstrated success managing development projects from concept through market introduction
  • Exceptional knowledge of best practices for project management and risk management
  • Exceptional creative design and problem solving ability
  • Driven by a strong enthusiasm for our company mission
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced early-stage startup where role flexibility is a must
  • Administrative and budget management skills relative to job expectations
  • Proficient with Microsoft Project, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Willingness to travel when required, up to 40%

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Biomedical Engineering
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification, or equivalent
  • Experience managing projects with external development partners
  • Excellent interpersonal communication, consensus-building skills, and leadership qualities
  • Should be comfortable working and interacting with international business/manufacturing partners
